Protect the Earth! Help Rustle! Recycle Your Mobile Electronics!

Why Recycle Your Old Mobile Electronic Device?

You may not know it, but the production and disposal of mobile phones and other mobile electronic devices (pagers, PDAs, etc.) presents a growing threat to human health and to the environment.

Here are some sobering facts:

There are almost a billion mobile phones waiting to be recycled around the world; either in drawers, or already in the waste stream. Another 130 million or so will be added this year from the US alone.

Once in the waste stream, these devices and their batteries leak Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Arsenic and other toxic substances into the water supply. How large is the problem? Consider this--today's consumer electronics constitute 40% of the lead found in landfills!

The main concern in regard to the presence of lead and other toxins in landfills is the potential for contamination of drinking water supplies. Here's an example of how easily it happens: Municipalities often incinerate their waste, instantly putting these toxic elements into the air, after which they return to earth in rain water. Since life on Earth depends on water, the threat is clear.

The toxins released into the environment from decaying electronics affect the human brain, heart, lungs, blood, kidneys, bones, nerves and more. And they have the same (or worse) kind of effect on smaller animals and plant life.

We've teamed up with Collective Good to offer you a way to both safely recycle your old cell phone, PDA or pager, AND to support the work of Rustle the Leaf Environmental Comics!
